PARKLAND (CBSMiami) — Investigators are trying to figure out what led a gunman to open fire at a Parkland high school killing 17 people.

Deputies confirmed 17 have died and at least 14 people were injured in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Broward Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Israel said 12 people died inside the  school, 2 died outside of the school, 1 person died on the corner near the school and 2 people died at hospital.

The suspected shooter, identified as Nikolaus Cruz, 19, is in custody.

Cruz, a former student, used an AR-15 rifle and had multiple magazines on him, Israel said. He said earlier he was not sure why Cruz was kicked out of the school.

“He always had guns on him and stuff like that,” said a student who knew Cruz. “He was a little bit of a troubled kid.”

The student said nobody in the school would pick on him.

Early Wednesday evening, medical examiners were still walking through the building, looking for any other victims, said Broward Mayor Beam Furr, who was a teacher for 25 years.

Officers arrested Cruz around 4 p.m., in a community near the school located at 11735 NW 47th Drive. Police later rushed him to Broward North hospital with a police escort. Israel said Cruz did not have significant injuries. He has since been taken to BSO headquarters.

The father of a student at the school says the suspected shooter was allegedly “wearing a black vest with a red shirt…and supposedly he pulled the fire alarm and planned it,” according to CBS This Morning.

The school was placed on lockdown for a few hours after the call which came in around 2 p.m., but students were trickling out slowly, many with their hands up and tears in their eyes. When they came out, students were leaving their backpacks in a pile outside of the school.

Inside the school, a student shared a picture as they took cover during the shooting.

dec 2015 to Jan 2016 they were discussing weapon modifications, what guns to buy, background checks and Islam. This was on the shooters first abandoned account. He was called 08_sy_ali_ed_16 but his account was deleted so we can't see the original messages.

Then in Summer 2017, The shooter is begging Syed to contact him as they hadn't met up in 4 months. This was on the shooters second abandoned account where we saw a weapon arsenal and holographic sights.
If anyone can get into this guys profile, maybe some comments from the shooter or strange postings can be found.

Gee... I wonder who 'he' unfollowed between the time they took down his page and present. Good thing the waybackmachine apparently decided today was the day to take a snapshot. Went from 84 to 83 followers. Do they let you access your Insta while you are in custody?

This was my archive for the alt account, totally blank for me right now https://archive.is/5KMwu
The main account (non MAGA hat) is 404ing on all the images on the archive.web link for me, but the main page is still cached for me I guess.

The 'heavily armed' shooter, named by police sources to DailyMail.com as former student Nicolas de Jesus Cruz, 19, entered Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland armed with an assault rifle and began shooting just after 2pm.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel confirmed that 17 people had been killed and dozens more were injured.
Cruz was armed with at least one AR-15 rifle and had 'multiple magazines' when he stormed the school, according to the sheriff.
The teenager had been expelled from the school for unknown 'disciplinary reasons'. Authorities have already started dissecting his social media accounts and reported that some of things he had been posting was 'very disturbing'.
Traumatized students said that once they heard reports of a mass shooting at the school, they knew it would be Cruz.
Matthew Walker, a 17-year-old student at the school, told WFOR-TV that all his classmates 'knew it was going to be him.'
'A lot of people were saying it was going to be him,' he said. 'A lot of kids threw jokes around saying that he was going to be the one to shoot up the school. It turns out that everyone predicted it. That's crazy.'
'He was going class to class just shooting at random kids,' he said. 'Everything he posts (on social media) is about weapons. It's sick.'

A math teacher at the school, Jim Gard, told the Miami Herald that Cruz had been identified as a threat in the past.

'We were told last year that he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him,' Gard, who taught the student last year, said.

'There were problems with him last year threatening students and I guess he was asked to leave campus.'

Gunfire rand out at 2.25pm shortly before dismissal time, sparking panic as students barricaded themselves into their classrooms.

Others were seen running out of the building with their hands in their air as police and SWAT teams swarmed the school. Those fleeing the school, in single file, each threw their backpack into a large pile and huddled together under trees across the street.

At around 4pm, two hours after the shooter first opened fire, police and SWAT teams took him into custody. Police describe him as a student and a former member of the U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program.

Desperate parents and relatives of students still locked down in the high school rushed to the scene to find out if their children were among the injured.

One mother, Michelle, whose daughter was inside, said there at least 20 students and teachers still barricaded in the school buildings. The unnamed mom said her daughter sent her a text that said: 'There's been a shooting in school ... and it's for real.'

A student, who was not identified, but claims to know Cruz told WSVN he was obsessed with guns and showed him pictures of them on his phone.
'He's been a troubled kid and he's always had a certain amount of issues going on. He shot guns because he felt it gave him, I guess, an exhilarating feeling.'
He added that Cruz made him nervous.

'I stayed clear of him most of the time. My time in alternate school, I did not want to be with him at all because I didn't want to cause any conflict with him because of the impression he gave off.'

The incident comes just a few weeks after a 15-year-old boy opened fire at his rural Kentucky high school, killing two and injuring more than two dozen others.
