Reports of crimes involving social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook have increased nearly eight-fold over four years, police figures reveal.

The data, supplied by 29 police forces in England, Scotland and Wales, shows a 780 per cent increase in the role of social networking sites in crime since 2008.

The figures, released under the Freedom of Information Act, show crime reports in which either Facebook or Twitter were deemed to be a key factor.
